A house is made up of several rooms, of course, but additionally, there are other spaces that transition from one room to another or little nooks and crannies that are not necessarily the main part of the room but lead to other rooms. These little areas need loads of attention! They’re often forgotten spaces but I’m here to tell you that these transition spaces are key to making your house flow from one room to another and making your house feel more like a home.
These spaces need special vignettes so that the views into these spaces are interesting and intriguing, leading you in. Drawing you in.
What’s a vignette? The dictionary says a vignette is a small ornamental design filling a space. That’s exactly what I’m talking about about. A vignette is a series of decorative objects, placed strategically together to create something interesting and pleasing to the eye all while filling in a blank space.
One key area is the hallway… especially a dead-end hallway. It’s the perfect blank space to add a special vignette.
Artwork is a key component to filling in a blank space and a blank wall as you can see in these images above. These are excellent ways to display artwork and I love the addition of wall lights too! But a successful vignette doesn’t stop at the walls. You need to add more… Something down low like a bench or a stool. Add a container with some plants or foliage as a little touch of something organic is always lovely. A burst of colour can lead you into that special vignette as well.
Don’t forget spots that lay between open concept rooms like this one below between the kitchen and the dining area. Or an extra long hallway can be broken up with a special vignette part way through as well.
Another key area to consider are secondary spaces. For instance, some rooms have corners, nooks or spaces that can transition from one room to another. And if you have a view into that secondary space, it’s the perfect opportunity to add a special vignette. Here are some examples below…
These aren’t the main parts of the rooms they sit in. That’s why their secondary. But as you walk through your home, you may find that these are the areas you first see. If that’s the case, add a special vignette to create a lovely little view into that space! Artwork. Mirrors. Small scale furniture. Pottery. Greenery. Decorative groupings. They all work to create a beautiful vignette.
So my message to you is this: Fill in those corners with something interesting. Create these little moments throughout your home, connecting one room to another, turning a house into a home.
